“Why use ConvertKit when there are other free email marketing platforms available?” Picture me asking myself this question a few years ago when I knew basically nothing about email marketing and why any of this mattered.
There’s a bunch of reasons why you should use Converkit (which I’ll be getting into), but the big answer is: Because you care about your subscribers and their sanity.
How is ConvertKit better than other programs?
Fun story… I was introduced to ConvertKit a few years ago when my business was very new (and not bringing in a ton of money). The $30/mo price tag seemed insane to me. I couldn’t imagine spending that kind of cash month to month without a guarantee that it was going to do me any good. Um, and how is this any better than Mailchimp or Mailerlite again?
I picked up a free trial of ConvertKit and I’ll admit it… I still didn’t understand. I set everything up – I made tags, email sequences, opt in forms… and I set out to start growing my list. I even got as far as paying for a month myself because, well… I wanted to give it the good college try.
I left ConvertKit. I’d tried Mailchimp before (it’s what I was being made to use at my then full time job), but I wasn’t really happy with it. I decided to try Mailerlite. Ummmm… instant WTFery. While Mailerlite has improved over the years, it was definitely not up to the standards and precise subscriber targeting that I had already become accustomed to.
That’s when this happened…

Yes, this totally happened. It didn’t take long for me to realize what a huge mistake I’d made. Here’s what made me go back…
But first… Looking for the free trial?
I know what it’s like to need to try before you buy. Here’s 14 days of ConvertKit for free… totally on the house. Build your opt ins and start growing your email list with confidence!

1. ConvertKit is focused on email marketing
If you’ve ever tried Mailchimp for example, you’re maybe accustomed to their highly designed emails with pretty layouts and lots of pictures. As a graphic designer who finds stuff like that important, I had to come to terms with one important fact:
I’m not Bath & Body Works and my brand cannot afford lower deliverability rates just because I wanted to go nuts with pictures.
Your emails should be focused on delivering information – not trying to make them crazy pretty with intricate layouts and graphics. ConvertKit is all about the emails – no frills necessary.
2. Tags are the bee’s knees
I talk about this quite a bit in my freebie course, How to Create a Resource Library – being able to tag your subscribers correctly so that you understand their interests and what to market to whom is honestly the most important part of email marketing.
Tags help us not annoy the crap out of people with emails about things they have already purchased, or opted out of hearing about. I love nurturing my email list with ConvertKit. They make this so easy.
3. Beautiful Forms & Landing Pages
To be fair, ConvertKit didn’t have the nicest of landing pages when I started using them. That said, they have made some major improvements – and that’s another reason to like them. They are always improving their product.
There’s a nice selection of Landing Page templates that you can customize based on whatever your opt in is – newsletters, ebooks, podcasts, etc.
4. Sequences make marketing easy
I absolutely love sequences because it means I can plan out every email a subscriber gets… I mean like, down to the day of the week. This is perfect if you really need that level of control (and trust me… you do) when marketing your tripwires and higher dollar offerings beyond whatever they signed up for. It literally runs the sequence for you – helping you make passive income as it delivers your marketing to your subscribers that you only had to set up once.
5. ConvertKit plays well with others
In the spirit of community over competition, ConvertKit knows how to play nice with the other tools you’re using for your business. That’s a wide range of tools like Zapier, Podia, Teachable, Stripe, Gumroad, WooCommerce, SendOwl and plenty of others.
6. Link Triggers for automated marketing
As if the tags and sequences weren’t already a huge help, link triggers and being able to further segment your list with automated rules is like… well, just picture my hands at the side of my head motioning a brain explosion (in a good way).
Here’s how these work…
You might want to segment your list into a few categories:
- Beginner
- Intermediate
- Advanced
You would create a landing page for each (remember, ConvertKit has some nice ones!) and all it needs to say is something like “Awesome! I have some info to share with you in the coming weeks… blah blah blah” basically confirming that they made a selection, and letting them know that more information is coming based on their choice.
What happens behind the scenes is that you’ll have 3 tags in ConvertKit for each category, and you can create an automated sequence for each of them. So every time someone clicks that link, the Trigger Rules (like in the picture above) puts them into that category and therefor, that sequence you made.
Um. That’s HUGE. It let’s you seriously focus your marketing efforts so you’re not trying to teach Advanced category people stuff that’s for beginners!\
ConvertKit is sophisticated and worth the money
If you’re wavering… maybe ho-humming about the price tag, I get it. I was there once myself! But do yourself a favor, okay? Try ConvertKit for free for 14 days. Take a look around and see the features up close for yourself.
